Ghost pictures in the panorama photo

When there is movement, it becomes exciting for the panorama photographer. Depending on the amount of movement, creating a panoramic photo using the technique of multiple, overlapping photos becomes very difficult. In the following example you can see the ghost pictures of punt drivers. In the complete (untreated) panoramic photo with the punting boats in front of the Hölderlin Tower and the collegiate church in Tübingen you can see three barges. However, punting boats always have only one person on the punting boat (in Tübingen anyway). Ghosts and clones are funny to see as an error. You can even toy around with it and make somebody appear twice in a panorama photo in different poses.

In the example photo you can see in the magnification very nicely that the two standing men appear twice on the picture. The front man on the left half disappeared - a ghost image. The posture of the standing man on the middle barge is also another one - so it has passed between both times - so here two photos were added together.

This happens if the cropping is wrongly selected when taking individual photos. In order to illustrate the problem, the selected sections of the individual photos were color-coded over the finished panorama photo in the following illustration. The two problematic sections are marked here. The sections must always overlap to a certain extent so that they can be added up later. Section 1 is identical to section 2 in the area where our pounders have proliferated miraculously. The backmost poker can only be seen once in the picture (although the foremost man in the back boat is also double).

In order to avoid the problem of ghost images, appropriate clippings should be selected for the individual photos. The ideal choice of cutouts would have been the one highlighted in color in the next picture. Section 2 should hold all moving elements and ideally still have right and left for overlapping areas without any moving elements. Cut-outs 1 and 3 are without moving elements, and so the finished panorama photo will be free of ghost images.

Of course, you don´t have much time in such situations. In reality, with this panoramic photo you would be the first single photo to do this with the section 2, then the one with the section 3 and then further around until you get to the section 1, and there you would wait until the punting barges are outside the section of the picture (which move downstream to the left).
